Governor J.B. Pritzker and Mayor Lori Lightfoot joined Chicagoans in Ukrainian Village Sunday afternoon speaking out against the war in Ukraine.

Governor Pritzker announced to well over 1,000 people gathered near Saints Volodymyr and Olha Ukrainian Catholic Church that Illinois will take a stand against Russia's invasion of Ukraine. He told the crowd that he takes the attack personally.

"My own family is from Kyiv, Ukraine," Pritzker said.

The governor joined Ukrainian dignitaries, several U.S. Congress representatives from Illinois and Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot, who said Chicago will also stand united with Ukraine.

"We must urge a federal immigration authority to provide temporary protective status for Ukrainians who may be in Chicago, and to open up our borders to Ukrainians who want to come here for freedom," Lightfoot said. "Open the borders so that they may be free."
