(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – Democratic Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker has sent a letter to Texas Gov. Gregg Abbott urging the Republican's administration to stop sending busloads of migrants to Chicago as temperatures begin plunging to dangerous levels.
"Chicago's temperatures this weekend are forecast to drop below zero," the letter, dated Friday, said. "Your callousness, sending buses and planes full of migrants in this weather, is now life-threatening to every one of the arrivals.
"Hundreds of children's and families' health and survival are at risk due to your actions."
For several months, the Abbott Administration has been hiring buses and even planes to carry asylum seekers from the U.S. Southern Border to Democratic strongholds that have identified themselves as "sanctuary cities." Abbott says he has done this in response to the chaotic situation in his state's border communities, and he blames President Biden for allowing things to devolve.
Pritzker and Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson have said Abbott is more interested in scoring political points while mistreating migrants. Pritzker in his letter says the migrants have been arriving without heavy clothing and proper footwear.
"As we grapple with the existing challenges of your ongoing manufactured crisis, the next few days are a threat to the families and children you are sending here. I am pleading with you to at least pause these transports in order to save lives," Pritzker wrote.
Chicago has been overwhelmed with the tens of thousands of migrants sent here. Many suburbs have approved ordinances seeking to discourage bus operators from dropping off migrants in their communities.
