CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Starting next week private security will be keeping an eye out for criminal activity along business strips in three Southwest Side neighborhoods.

Private security guards will be patrolling, in marked cars, business areas in the Beverly, Morgan Park and Mount Greenwood neighborhoods. They’ll watch for any signs of suspicious activity along 95th, 103rd, and 111th Streets, plus Western and Kedzie avenues.

According to an email to residents from Ald. Matt O’Shea, the security is being funded by a micro-grant from the City of Chicago. A survey was conducted on ways to help local businesses recover from the pandemic, and private security was the top choice among business owners.

The alderman said that in the face of troubling Chicago police staff shortages, besides supporting police, the community must look at other opportunities to promote public safety. O’Shea reminded residents that while the new program will make the community safer, the security guards are not police officers. Their job will be to watch for criminal activity and call the police.
