CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Looking to remain visible an to continue calling on federal protections to abortion access, activists rallied Saturday at Federal Plaza in downtown Chicago.
Pro-abortion activists said the Biden administration could still do more to protect access to abortion nationwide.
“We demand that the federal government, right now, use all the powers at its disposal to protect our rights, to ensure this basic right of women to determine when and if we’re going to have children, what role we’ll play in society,” said Jay Becker, an organizer with Rise Up for Abortion Rights. “We’re at a crossroads here.”
Becker said it’s not enough to outlaw the prosecution of people who cross state lines in order to get an abortion.
Biden’s attempt to to protect abortion access through executive orders, Becker added, fall short.
One of Becker’s suggestions: Open up federal land to abortion providers.
“What is their response about using federal lands? ‘That would be dangerous.’” Becker said. “Dangerous for whom? How about the danger right now when a 10-year-old victim of rape has to cross state lines, and now her doctor is being investigated. That abortion would be illegal next month in Indiana.”
