CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Columbus Drive would be renamed after former President Barack Obama, under a proposal introduced in the Chicago City Council Wednesday.
Fourth Ward Alderman Lamont Robinson said the street name would honor the country’s first Black president, add a tourist destination and demonstrate Barack Obama’s inspiring journey.
Robinson proposed renaming Columbus, from north of the river in Streeterville, south to Grant Park, where Obama made his election night acceptance speech in 2008.
The Transportation Committee and full City Council would need to approve it.
The City removed a statue of Columbus from Grant Park four years ago.
Six years ago, the State renamed part of I-55 in the southwest suburbs after the former president.
The head of the Joint Civic Committee of Italian-Americans said they are furious over the idea, calling it another flippant act against an ethnic group that has contributed much to Chicago.
Ron Onesti suggests the city name another street after Obama, such as one near his home or presidential center.
Ald. Robinson responded: “Barack Obama unified people of all religions and backgrounds and unified the Nation. This is more so about celebrating the President who unified the nation."
