CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) – Contract talks are scheduled to resume Monday in an effort to end a teachers strike in the western suburbs.
Teachers went on strike Friday against Proviso Township High School District 209. There were not supposed to be any contract talks over the weekend and Monday’s talks would be the first in nearly a week. Federally mediated negotiations are also scheduled Wednesday.
“If we want to retain our teachers and give consistency to our kids and what this community deserves, they need to start paying the teachers more so we can keep the good teachers here in Proviso where they belong,” West Suburban Teachers Union President Rachel Esposito told WBBM Newsradio Friday.
About 4,200 students are affected by the strike, though they were scheduled to be off Monday anyway for Pulaski Day.
District 209 said breakfast and lunch service will resume for students Tuesday whether there are classes or not.
