(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- So far this year, nine bats found in Cook County have tested positive for rabies, and now you can see where they were located.
The county's Department of Animal and Rabies Control (ARC) created an interactive map to help raise awareness about rabies prevention.
The map shows locations were rabid bats were found this year and previous years, going back to 2018.
ARC says a significant number of the bats this year were inside people's homes.
This means indoor pets could still be exposed to rabies.
Getting pets vaccinated is the best way to protect them from the disease, officials say. To help accomplish this, ARC is hosting a clinic on November 18th with low- to no-cost rabies vaccinations.
“Rabies is a completely preventable disease and is always fatal to unvaccinated pets,” said ARC Administrator Dr. Mamadou Diakhate, DVM. “Ensuring your dogs and cats are current on rabies and other vaccinations is critical to their health and yours.”
