(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A nearly 90-year-old bridge in Joliet is shut down again after it stopped working properly over the weekend.
The Brandon Road Bridge over the Des Plaines River reopened in early April after being shut down for more than a year for repairs.
Now, it’s closed again.
Illinois Department of Transportation spokeswoman Maria Castaneda on Monday said it appears that a bracket that holds the bridge’s center locking mechanism broke and a new piece may need to be designed and fabricated.
The Brandon Road Bridge was built in the early 1930s and, when operating properly, handles more than 5,000 vehicles a day.
