CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Early voting in Northwest Indiana saw record numbers of people lining up to cast ballots in person.
Not only did they vote in record numbers on Tuesday, the first day of early voting in Indiana, but election officials in Lake, Porter, and LaPorte counties also report unprecedented numbers of voters requesting mail-in ballots.
In Lake County, the Election Board Director Michalle Fajman said, "the numbers are through the roof."
She told the Northwest Indiana Times that more than 4,400 people cast ballots on the first day, compared to 1,400 on the first day in 2016.
In Porter County, nearly 2,000 voted on Tuesday, compared to 500 in 2016.
As for mail-in ballots, 30,000 have been requested in Lake County, 12,000 in Porter, and 7,000 in LaPorte, well above previous numbers. .
