(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – Four people have been charged with felony reckless discharge of a weapon after they allegedly fired bullets that came perilously close to other people earlier this week, authorities in Lake County said.
In the first incident Monday, sheriff's deputies responded to a residence in unincorporated Wauconda around 2:20 p.m. for a report of shots fired. A man there said a bullet narrowly missed his head and shattered a sliding glass door as he and his wife were on the back porch, the Lake County Sheriff's Office said.
Deputies followed the trajectory of the bullet to a nearby property and found eight pistols and a rifle lying on a table, officials said. They determined three had been firing weapons toward the back of the property when a bullet struck the house of the person who had alerted police, authorities say.
Charged with reckless discharge of a firearm were: Omar Macias, 28, of Waukegan; Martin D. Hernandez, 30, of Round Lake Beach; and Joseph Rodriguez, 33, of Round Lake. Each was ordered held on $500,000 bond, the sheriff's office said.
"Evidence of alcohol consumption was located at the scene. The vacant property is owned by an employer of one of the three arrested. Further investigation is being conducted to see if they had permission to be at the property," police said.
Later Monday, around 10 p.m., deputies investigated another call about shots fired. This time, several passengers aboard a boat on Diamond Lake said a woman had been shooting toward them from a dock.
Forty-six-year-old Kristy A. Shibli of unincorporated Mundelein allegedly shot several rounds toward the boat -- nobody was struck – "for fun," authorities said.
"It appears she believed the sound of fireworks being set off in the area would mask the sound of her gunfire," the sheriff's news release said.
Shibli was charged with reckless discharge of a firearm and was being held on $50,000 bail, police said.
"Both of these instances involved incredibly reckless acts, and undoubtedly could have resulted in innocent people being shot. The offenders charged in these cases acted completely irresponsible and without any regard for the safety of others," Sheriff John D. Idleburg said in a prepared statement.
