(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Congressional Democrats facing Republican challengers in November have been making sure voters know what's in the big Inflation Reduction Act for them. For Naperville Congresswoman Lauren Underwood, the big focus is health care.
Underwood is a registered nurse by profession. She said the provisions in the Inflation Reduction Act dealing with prescription drugs alone are historic.
“In this Inflation Reduction Act, there are several provisions to help directly lower prescription drug prices for seniors by giving Medicare the authority to negotiate their prescription drug prices,” Underwood said. “This is the first time it’s ever happened in our country’s history.”
The package also puts a $35 per month cap on what seniors will have to pay for Insulin to treat diabetes. It extends subsidies for people who bought their private health insurance through the Affordable Care Act, as well.
Underwood said she's been working to reduce the cost of health care and increase the access to that care since she was first elected.
“[The bill] says that no one would pay more than 8.5% of their income for Silver Level Marketplace plans — that’s the good, high-quality coverage that people want and are excited about. This is an immediate action that will be taken to extend the availability of these tax credits for an additional three years.”
The cap on insulin for people on Medicare takes effect next year.
