CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- It’s looking more and more likely that one of the highlights of summers in Chicago could take place, and maybe at or near full capacity.

Lollapalooza is expected to return to Chicago with a four-day event, and scheduled to take place July 29-Aug. 1 in Grant Park; and, according to Variety, it’s looking like a sure thing.

Sources told Variety that the City of Chicago gave Lollapalooza event organizers the greenlight to hold the festival at near-to or -full-capacity, and an official announcement, likely with headliners, is expected to come next week.

In a statement Thursday evening, Mayor Lori Lightfoot’s Office responded to the Variety report: “The Mayor’s Office and CDPH (Chicago Department of Public Health) have been in conversation with several large event organizers, including the team at Lollapalooza, on how to bring these experiences back to Chicago in safe way. We are taking these events case by case and determining how we can ensure the safety of our patrons. While conversations have been moving forward in a positive way, nothing has been confirmed.”

One already-approved music festival in early July, the Windy City Smokeout, will require all vendors, staff, and performers to be fully vaccinated, and non-vaccinated fest-goers will need to provide proof of COVID-19 test results.

As of Friday morning, the Lollapalooza website still lists the 2020 performer line-up, but does give people a chance to provide their email addresses in order to get info about 2021 tickets, performers, and schedules once those are available.
