VALPARAISO, IND. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - There’s good news to report about an adult bald eagle that was found near death last week in a flooded ditch in Michigan City.

The eagle is one of three currently being nursed back to health at the Humane Indiana Wildlife Rescue in Valparaiso.

Director Nicole Harmon said two,  both thought to have been hit by cars, are now gaining strength in the facility’s largest flight enclosure. That includes the bird found by a couple joggers in Michigan City last week.

“Had they not found him, the chances of him surviving even the next two or three hours would have been slim to none,” Harmon said.

She said his condition has improved dramatically, and he’s regaining strength in the flight enclosure ahead of his release back into the wild.

The second, younger eagle in the enclosure is expected to be released next week.

Harmon said she’s treated five eagles in two-and-a-half months. Two didn’t survive. That’s compared to just 13 over the previous nine years.

“For our facility to see five eagles in a span of two-and-a-half months, it just feels unbelievable,” Harmon said.
