CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Residents of Chicago’s South Shore neighborhood — near where the Obama Presidential Center is being built — would have housing protections under an ordinance introduced in the City Council.

South Shore residents and displaced residents rallied outside City Hall Thursday. They were calling for a community benefits agreement.

“We’ve got stuff in there that would protect us if we’re homeowners, that would protect us if we’re condo owners, to protect and support property owners, as well as renters,” said activist Brandon Patterson.

The South Shore Housing Preservation Ordinance is sponsored by freshman Ald. Desmon Yancy (.

“South Shore, particularly the 60649 zip code, has had more evictions than any other zip code in the city,” said Yancy. “We have to do something about it.”

The ordinance includes more than $40 million in grant money for rehabs, down payment assistance and help with property tax debt, among other things.

Organizers said a breakdown of the community benefits agreement can be found here.
