(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Cook County are urged to limit how much water they use at home, following this week’s deluge of rain.

The Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago has issued an "Overflow Action Alert," asking people temporarily to limit baths, showers, toilet flushing, as well as washing clothes and running dishwashers.

President Kari Steele said limiting water use in homes reduces the amount of water getting into the sewers. That helps the system handle the rainfall and reduces the risk of flooding in basements and streets, she adds.
