CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - The City is celebrating the completion of the resurfacing of DuSable Lake Shore Drive, bittersweet because of the death of a construction worker.

Alderman Brian Hopkins and Transportation Commissioner Gia Biagi were at DuSable Lake Shore Drive and Fullerton, where there was a moment of silence for the construction worker.

“The tragic and senseless and needless loss of a 45-year-old South Side family man, Ken Hernandez, who was struck by a motorist who failed to heed the many warnings, the admonitions to slow down in a work zone,” Hopkins said.

Commissioner Biagi noted the resurfacing of the drive was done in two months, on time and on budget.

“We used interesting techniques that maybe only transportation nerds are interested in, but echelon paving was one of those techniques…You could imagine sort of a ‘Mighty Ducks’ formation of a couple of pavers that work side by side to complete that longitudinal joint seamlessly. The work goes faster, and it's better,” Biagi said.

Much of the work was done in the overnight hours to limit disruption.
