CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Uber and Lyft drivers rallied outside City Hall today, calling for passage of an ordinance championing rideshare drivers rights.

Rideshare drivers and supporters marched outside City Hall in support of an ordinance that would raise drivers' pay, stop their companies from skimming their wages and protect their safety.

"I feel that a dollar per mile is fair. It's what it started as seven years ago," said Seven-year driver Brian Bettenhauser.

"It was $1.35 per mile. It's the only job that consistently gets a rate cut every year and they spin it as a positive for us, because we'll be busier working."

1st Ward Alderman Daniel La Spata spoke up for safety. "Workers in this city still get carjacked on a regular basis."

Organizers said New York City and Seattle have similar laws.
