A group of third graders in west suburban River Forest are reaching out to Ukraine, with something tasty.

The children, who attend Willard Elementary School, held a bake sale on Lathrop Avenue in River Forest on Friday, to raise money for UNICEF, to help children Ukraine.

Lindsay Mcintyre is the mother of twins at Willard and told WBBM, the kids "started brainstorming during recess about what they could do for Ukraine and they thought about doing a bake sale."

She said the effort proves every little bit helps.

"I think we're also showing the kids that anybody can make a difference and anyone can contribute and they are learning about it at school, they're seeing it on the news, they're talking about it at their dinner table so they know how important it is and they see how children are affected to so that was one reason they wanted to donate the money to UNICEF, too, so they could directly impact the kids over there."

The bake sale on a sunny Friday afternoon was doing brisk business with cookies, brownies, hot chocolate, and even dog treats among the popular items.

Nine-year-old Isabelle Woltman told WBBM, "We feel bad for Ukraine and want to help."

Eight-year-old Haven Mcintyre said she "told a lot of people at recess" to spread the word.

Third grader Cassidy Cortese said the sale was "a big one" and "we hope that it helps a lot."

Abby Roche, another Willard student, seemed especially proud of the hot chocolate, as she sipped a cup on the cool, but sunny day in suburban Chicago with thoughts of Ukraine on many young people's minds.

Abby's mother, Lindsey, was hopeful that they wouldn't run out of bake goods too soon. The sale ended up being quite a success, bringing in more than $4,000.
