CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A River North Mexican restaurant thinks what many people could use right now during the pandemic is a bit of Christmas cheer, so it has created what it calls a winter wonderland.
Marissa Tuñon is the director of operations at Mercadito on West Kinzie in River North.
"We have decided we have had enough of 2020, so we said let's put up the tree and call it a year. It has been, as you know, a less than perfect year for everyone and we wanted to bring just a little bit of joy and cheer, and it seems like everyone gets happy when they see the holidays around," she said.
So the restaurant created what it calls "Put Up the Christmas Tree and Call It a Year" pop-up.
The restaurant's main dining room has been decorated with a couple Christmas trees, a fake fireplace, and various other holiday decorations.
Customers who show up in Christmas sweaters or wear other holiday items receive a 15 percent discount on food and drinks.
The restaurant had plans to run the pop-up through Sunday, but it has been so popular, it has been extended a week to Oct. 18.
