CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - If you live around the University of Illinois-Chicago you may start seeing robots on the sidewalk.
The full city council has now approved a two-year pilot program to allow food delivery robots on the sidewalks - and in crosswalks - in the UIC area.
They’re already delivering on part of UIC’s campus. But, this pilot program would expand the robots’ territory - from Ogden to Halsted and Roosevelt Road to the Eisenhower Expressway.
The city said the robots will partner with restaurants and grocery stores in the general UIC area.
The company behind the robots is Starship Technologies, and its website said the food delivery robots weigh 75 pounds apiece, travel up to 4 miles an hour, can deliver in rain and snow and each one has a situational awareness bubble around it, mindful of people and dogs.
“We are very excited with approval from the city of Chicago to expand our services. We’ve provided deliveries on a portion of the campus for the past year and that has proved to be wildly successful. We are looking forward to serving more Chicagoans and including more restaurants in our automated delivery service,” Starship Technologies Head of U.S. Operations Nick Handricks said in a statement.
