(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A fundraiser for gun violence prevention called Rock the Ride has been held in Napa, Calif., since 2018, following a shooting at a veterans' home there.

This Sunday, though, the bike ride will kick off from Hubbard Woods Park in Winnetka. It will mark Rock the Ride's first expansion, said Highland Park Community Foundation Executive Director Terri Olian.

"With the national events that we read about all the time, I imagine it will go to other communities, as well, but we feel very honored," Olian said.

People can sign up for a 25- or 12-mile bike ride, a 3-mile walk, or the brunch afterward.

The rides will have a rest stop in Highland Park, where participants can stop at the memorial to the seven people who were killed in the 2022 parade shooting.

Online registration is open through 3 p.m. on Friday, with donations also benefiting two national gun control organizations: Gifford Law Center and Moms Demand Action/Everytown for Gun Safety.

Olian said the Highland Park Community Foundation will use the funds to give grants to groups that are addressing mental health and other needs of parade shooting victims and survivors.

"Children, young children, high schoolers, adults have been severely impacted by what happened last July," Olian said. "It takes a lot of time, and it takes a lot of effort, and it takes a lot of people coming together to support those needs."
