CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Infestations of mice and bed bugs, flooding and faulty appliances — those are a few of the issues some tenants of Northpoint Apartments in Rogers Park said they're dealing with.

Tenants said Related Midwest, which manages the property, is ignoring their complaints.

“Shame on them, shame,” said Brenda Dunkins. “It’s mice-infested galore — galore. We’re supposed to have working appliances, working heaters.”

Duncans, and a handful of other tenants and supporters, gathered to protest outside of their management office.

“Because we’re low income, that’s how people treat us,” Dunkins said.

The organization Northside Action for Justice is trying to help the tenants.

“We are not asking any more,” said housing organizer Angela Clay. “We are demanding.”

The group also called on the City of Chicago to stop investing any money with Related Midwest until the issues are resolved.

“The money is coming from the federal government,” said Clay. “We are going to be working our way up the chain until they understand that we are to be taken serious.”

Clay added that they are considering taking legal action.

A statement from the building’s owners said, in part, that the company has spent more than $21 million on renovations to units and common areas, including a new roof and updated plumbing.

“If this is a $21 million job, y’all better go get your money back,” Dunkins said.
