CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Clinics across the state have administered over 9 million doses of the COVID-19 vaccine so far. The costs associated with inoculating people against the virus can add up.

The Chicago Sun-Times reported the largest mass vaccination sites, such as the United Center, cost up to $400,000 a day to run. That includes the cost of leasing the property, hundreds of workers and the equipment to store the vaccines.

Smaller vaccine sites have lower overall expenses, but a higher cost per shot compared to larger facilities that administer thousands of vaccines per day.

The Illinois Department of Public Health said most of the expenses associated with running vaccine clinics are reimbursed by the federal government.
