(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The Salvation Army needs gently used winter coats to help keep Chicagoans warm during the winter months.

With recent sub-zero temperatures and intense winds, Salvation Army spokesperson Brian Duewel said the donations are crucial in making sure Chicagoans can do things, like run basic errands.

“For a lot of Chicagoans, they can't afford those winter items. So, something as simple as an extra coat dropped in a box can help a mother run to the store and be safe in the weather."

He says the Salvation Army is behind its goal, and recent inflation has not helped.

“The number of people that need help is higher than it has been in years past but the number of people that can actually donate has gone down, so the need is greater this year than it's ever been before."

Donation boxes are at all Jewel-Osco stores and the Bears Fit location, donations are being accepted until Feb. 15.

Those looking to receive a coat can call the Salvation Army to request a voucher at 773-205-3690.
