CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - A Save-A-Lot grocery store that closed in the Auburn Gresham neighborhood five years ago reopened this week.

Reopening was two years behind schedule, following a series of delays related to renovation work. Part of the floor had to be raised.

People shopping here on Halsted, just south of 79th Street, said, essentially, “better late than never.”

“It’s my first time going in there since it’s been up,” one woman told WBBM. “I’m glad because the next grocery store is kind of far.”

The store operator, Yellow Banana, received $13 million from the City in 2022 to renovate and reopen six Save-A-Lot stores on the South and West Sides.

The last one, in West Lawn, is expected to be open next month.

These stores did not have the best reputation in the past. The company seems to be putting that behind it.

The store was well-stocked, and the produce looked fresh.

However, one woman said food prices could be better.
