EVANSTON (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - An Evanston homeless shelter is getting a major financial boost from a local congresswoman.

After 35 years of operation, Hilda’s Place, at 1456 Chicago Ave., in Evanston, stopped providing overnight shelter. The decision came in the spring of 2020, due to pandemic related financial issues.

“What we’re seeing now is to rent an affordable place to live in Evanston, Chicago and most places around the country is actually beyond reach for many people,” said Illinois Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky.

Schakowsky helped secure $2 million in federal funding for Hilda’s Place, which will allow it to fully reopen and renovate.

“All people need to have a decent place to put a head down at night,” Schakowsky said. “That is what Hilda’s Place will now be able to do for up to 50 people every single night of the year.”

Schakowsky called this federal money well-spent and said more of it needs to be spent to address homelessness locally and nationwide.
