(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Schaumburg is updating the language in its village code to make it more inclusive and modern, officials say.
Trustees voted Tuesday night on the first round of changes, which involve pronouns in the job descriptions and responsibilities of village officials. Most of the nearly 60 changes involved replacing male pronouns with gender-neutral ones — exchanging “he” and ‘him” for “they” and “their,” for example.
The Daily Herald reports a section banning discrimination in appointments added sexual orientation and disability. Other changes included swapping terms like “invalid” and “incompetent” for “disabled,” the paper said.
The village says it plans to continue updating by reviewing four more ordinances this year.
