(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Round Lake Area School District 116 cancelled classes at each of its 11 schools Thursday because of an ongoing safety incident involving a student, officials said.

A statement from the district superintendent says there was an incident on Tuesday evening following a board of education meeting, during which a student hit a staff member.

The student was removed but returned the following day and trespassed in an area where buses are parked. He was apprehended by police Thursday and will no longer be attending any school in the district, school superintendent Donn Mendoza said.

All after-school activities were also cancelled.

"We understand that this decision may cause conflicts with family schedules. However, we feel it is in everyone's best interest to ensure that we have a plan to address this matter in the safest and most appropriate manner," the statement said.

Mendoza said he was meeting with police to develop the plan.
