Suburban school districts join suit against Meta, TikTok, Snapchat and YouTube

(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Public schools in McHenry County are suing Meta, TikTok, Snapchat and YouTube and claiming the social media companies have caused a mental health crisis among students.

Community High School District 155 in Crystal Lake and Cary District 26 have joined more than 800 districts across the country in suing the social media giants.

The suit by a California personal injury law firm claims children are subjected to harmful content on platforms that encourage eating disorders and cyberbullying.

The District 26 superintendent tells the Northwest Herald they've had to hire more social workers to address students' mental health needs in part because of social media.

Frantz Law Group claims the suit aims to hold companies accountable and help districts pay for necessary mental health services.
