Suburban school officials seek COVID guidance from Board of Education for upcoming school year

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Suburban school superintendents are looking for guidance from the Illinois Board of Education concerning COVID-19 guidelines for the upcoming school year.

There was some frustration among the superintendents during a meeting with the Illinois Board of Education about a lack of details regarding what's going to happen the fall.

Wheaton-Warrenville Community Unit School District 200 Superintendent Jeff Schuler said "it might feel like it’s early in the summer, but the planning has to happen now...The sooner we know, the better to plan, so we’re hoping you can provide us with information as soon as possible."

Indian Prairie School District 204 Superintendent Adrian Talley said the district spend $200,000 to rent tents for the past school year to provide students with distance during lunch; and they need to know now whether they’ll be needed again.

ISBE Superintendent Carmen Ayala said they will try to put out guidance as quickly as they can.

According to the Tribune, some parents spoke during the board meeting, expressing their disappointment over mask mandates, calling them a violation of parental rights. They were also critical of contact tracing and quarantines.
