Search begins for Ald. Patrick Daley Thompson’s replacement following tax fraud conviction

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) – There is going to be a new alderman in Chicago’s 11th Ward now that the current one, Patrick Daley Thompson, has been convicted on tax fraud charges.

Under Illinois law, Thompson must resign his position on the City Council because he’s not allowed to serve if convicted of a felony, which he was Monday.

On the same day as his trial’s closing arguments, a jury quickly found Thompson guilty of lying to the FDIC about loans he took out. He also lied on his income taxes over a five-year period, including in 2013 when he claimed he paid more than $32,000 in home mortgage interest when he knew he didn’t.

Once Thompson officially steps down, Mayor Lori Lightfoot will have 60 days to name a replacement.
