BEVERLY SHORES, IND. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - The search is resuming for a swimmer missing near the town of Beverly Shores in Northwest Indiana.

At this point, the search has shifted to a recovery mission.

According to the Indiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR), the swimmer is a 17-year-old boy from Minnesota. He was one of several people Tuesday who got into trouble at Kemel Beach, which is on the western edge of Beverly Shores and the Indiana Dunes State Park.

The DNR said first responders arrived at the beach shortly after 2:10 p.m. and encountered two distressed swimmers and a Good Samaritan who were onshore. They were in need of medical attention. The three were transported to an area hospital in stable condition, the DNR said.

A third swimmer, the teenage boy, was accounted for and last spotted about 300 feet from shore before he went under.

According to the DNR, rescuers tried to go in the water but the waves were too dangerous. Their search was limited to the shore, with the implementation of drones and vehicles from the U.S. Coast Guard and Lake County Sheriff's Office Marine Unit.

Tuesday, the National Weather Service issued a Beach Hazard Statement, with waves expected to be six to nine feet high.

This morning, the DNR says their search will be dependent on the water conditions. As of 8:30 a.m., the high waves remained, thus the search continue to be shore-based.
