44 people have applied to become Chicago’s next police superintendent.
The head of the Community Commission for Public Safety and Accountability is not sharing any names, but says the candidates include several people who currently or formerly worked for the department, plus law enforcement leaders in major cities.
The seven-member panel’s next step is to get to know the applicants, in terms of how they make decisions and work with communities and officers.
An outside firm is helping them pare down the list to three finalists they must submit to Mayor Johnson by Nov. 12.
Supt. Larry Snelling retired July 15, after assuming the post in Sept. 2023.
During that search, the commission had 54 applicants and interviewed 16.
