(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Crews with the Indiana Department of Natural Resources are heading out this morning to search for the two missing boaters who went into Lake Michigan near Whiting, Indiana, shortly after 2:30 p.m. on Friday.

According to a spokesperson with the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, the search rescue team will be using sonar in the water and drones to conduct searches from the air.

The two men were initially on board a boat with a group of people when one man decided to jump off. He began to struggle, and according to officials another man jumped in to help but couldn't.

Then, a third man put on a life jacket and jumped into the water, but was unable to get to the other men. The three men became separated from the boat because of 2-to-5-foot waves caused by windy conditions.

The two men went under and never resurfaced, according to officials.

The third swimmer was rescued and taken to the hospital.

One of the missing swimmers is from Elk Grove Village, the other Mount Prospect.

Officials found the boat, which had been carrying 12 people, including the three men who went into the water.

Officials suspended their search about 10 p.m., but plan to resume Saturday morning.
