(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Northwestern University’s new stadium won’t open until 2026, but officials on Monday shared new renderings of how Ryan Field will look after the $850 million project is complete.

A patio with couches and chairs, an indoor space with chandeliers and wood beams, a green space for movie watching: Those are some of the amenities around the new Ryan field.

The stadium will have a canopy to protect fans and 35,000 seats with backs, which Northwestern promises to have views better than those on TV.

Mark Jackson, Northwestern’s Combe Family Vice President for Athletics and Recreation said the “project marks a new era for Northwestern and the Big Ten.”

“With the new Ryan Field, we’re embracing a visionary opportunity for Northwestern that will support our student-athletes with the best stadium in college sports,” Jackson said. “Our new stadium will provide a dynamic, fan-focused environment that reflects Chicago’s prominence in the Big Ten Conference and elevates the standards for college football stadiums nationwide.”

Jackson added that the stadium will be a destination for more than game days. It'll be an inclusive, year-round gathering place.

The $850 million stadium is being funded mainly by insurance billionaire and Northwestern Alum Patrick Ryan and his family.
