(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin on Monday said a government shutdown is unnecessary, even as that scenario became increasingly likely.
Some congressional Republicans say if they refuse to raise the debt limit and the government is forced to shut down, it could be just what the country needs to stop runaway spending.
Durbin, the Senate’s No. 2 Democrat, said a shutdown is just what this nation doesn’t need because it will hurt everyone from veterans to Social Security recipients.
“It’s a long, long list, and it’s totally unnecessary,” Durbin told reporters in Bolingbrook, where he met Monday with striking UAW workers.
Durbin said there are scant days left to avert a shutdown.
