CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Layoffs at a senior assisted living company based in Chicago have the head of the state’s chapter of AARP concerned.
State government received required notice over a week ago that Enlivant plans to lay off 284 employees starting in July. While the privately held company says the cuts are only to its support center in Chicago, AARP State Director Philippe Largent worries about the future.
"What happens if Enlivant is no longer a provider in this marketplace? What happens to the residents what happens to their care? Can they find other facilities to take them to take them in?"
He calls the role of assisted living facilities like those Enlivant runs in Rockford and Joliet, South Milwaukee and Merrillville ‘vital’. Largent points to Illinois’ ranking of 32nd in the country for overall nursing home care. As a reason, it’s crucial to have lots of options to keep seniors out of more medically-complex facilities.
