High school senior shot and killed in South Loop 'knew he was somebody and wanted to go places'

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Students had just gotten out for the day at Perspectives Charter School.

Cameron Rayford was in the South Loop, in a Jeep with one of his friends, when shots were fired from a passing Kia. Rayford, a senior at Perspectives, was killed. He was 18.

LaGena Cain's son was his classmate. She told CBS 2 he was known to dress his best, often wearing suits.

"That says that he knew he was somebody," Cain said. "That says that he wanted to go places — and definitely not the grave at 18 years old."

The shooting happened at State and Cullerton Streets, near the Central District Chicago police station. Rayford's friend was also shot and survived.

"They don't even care that the police station is right down the street," Cain told CBS 2. "They're willing to do this in broad daylight, in front of everybody."

Chicago police are continuing to investigate the murder, but the motive is still unclear.

Police said the Kia, from which the shots were fired, was abandoned nearby just after the incident. It had been stolen.

Cain said Rayford's classmates, including her son, are traumatized. She said she's thinking about the teen's mother.
