(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A Skokie police sergeant is taking police leadership and the village to court over allegations that she was passed over for promotion eight times in the past seven years because of her gender.

In a recently filed federal civil rights lawsuit, Sgt. Melissa Russell named the village of Skokie, its current and former police chief, as well as a commanding officer.

In addition to denied advancements, Russell claimed her coworkers created a hostile work environment toward women and retaliated against her when she complained about gender discrimination.

A statement from the village said there was no merit to her complaints.

Russell is seeking back pay for lost wages and benefits, as well as a promotion to commander.
