CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The Illinois House has passed a bill that would require sex education courses in public schools include warnings about "sexting."
Rockford State Representative Maurice West said sexting has become a bigger issue during the pandemic, especially as students were remote learning at home where they were not supervised in-person by teachers.
"I have received calls from schools, parents, and the media having conversation on how sexting has gone to a whole new level with our students being remote and on host sites such as Zoom, Webex and the like," he said.
West said the lessons for students from sixth grade through senior year of high school would include the consequences of sexting, as well as the harassment and bullying it can cause.
"Only for the schools that have sex education courses, they are asked to have an age appropriate discussion on this topic," he said.
The bill still needs approval from the Illinois Senate.
