It's that time: Shedd penguins start building nests

(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – The penguins at the Shedd Aquarium are beginning to set up their nests, and visitors can get a firsthand view over the next several weeks.

Keepers at the habitat have laid out nest-building materials, including rocks, pieces of hose and lavender. These mimic the options available to penguins in their native environments, Shedd officials say.

To attract a female mate or reinforce a current bond, male penguins will often build their own nests. Female penguins, once they are paired, will also help with the building process.

If nesting results in an egg or a chick, the bonded pair share the responsibilities of caring for their offspring.

The Shedd has two species of penguins – rockhopper and Magellanic.
