MATTESON, Ill. (WBBM Newsradio) — Two people are in custody following a police chase in the south suburbs Monday morning that prompted a shelter-in-place order.

The Matteson Police Department said it received a 9-1-1 call reporting several men acting suspiciously in a residential neighborhood along Central Avenue, just south of Vollmer Road. The subjects were reportedly armed with firearms.

When officers arrived, the suspects fled in multiple vehicles. Police said those vehicles were later found abandoned, and the occupants ran from the scene. That sparked a large search involving Matteson police, Tinley Park police and the Will County Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities initially ordered residents near Harlem and Vollmer to remain inside with doors locked, but the order was lifted later in the morning after the immediate area was cleared.

Police confirmed two suspects have been taken into custody. The search continues for additional individuals who may still be at large.

Investigators urge anyone with information to call the Matteson Police Department’s non-emergency line at 708-503-3130 or submit tips through the village’s website via Tip411.
