(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A Gary, Indiana man is charged with misdemeanor theft after an alleged sleight-of-hand attempt at a Portage Walmart.

Willie Watts, 31, is accused of trying to steal a projector valued at $269 by scanning a package of Twizzlers at the self-checkout. The red licorice candy covered the bar code on the projector, police said.

A loss-prevention officer caught him. Watts claimed he didn't know the projector did not scan, the police report said.

He reportedly offered to pay, but the Times of Northwest Indiana reports he was locked up instead.

Police say Watts also had removed a security tag from the electronics device. He reportedly claimed he didn't want to wait for an employee to do it for him at checkout.
