(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The Loyola University men’s basketball team is going to the NCAA tournament for the second year in a row, and their biggest fan, Sister Jean, will be watching.

Fresh off the Ramblers’ winning the Missouri Valley Conference championship in St. Louis, the team chaplain is beaming with pride.

“That’s been their big passion during this time of play is to get there, and we’re so happy,” she said.

The 102-year-old has gone to all the home games this year, only traveling for road games when they’re not too far away. She regularly sends emails to the team with her post-game thoughts and advice.

She is still unhappy about how last year’s NCAA tournament ended for Loyola – losing to Oregon State in the Sweet 16 after COVID sent Virginia Commonwealth home.

Sister Jean appreciates the gesture Coach Drew Valentine made as he cut down the net and gave her a piece after winning the conference championship.

She said the team is lucky he moved into the head coaching position after four years under Porter Moser. “We don’t expect him to be Porter, we expect him to be Drew Valentine,” she said.
