Mayor Johnson continues to consider vetoing an ordinance that would put new restrictions on the sale of hemp-derived products in the city, and some small business owners say it’s crucial that he does.
“We believe in fair, clear and effective regulation, not reactionary policies that harm local economies.”
Here inside Bronzeville Smoke Shop, members of the Illinois Hemp Coalition, including shop owner Joyce LaGrone, say a ban on hemp products would be bad for business and residents.
“Many of my customers are seniors who use hemp products for pain relief, inflammation and help sleeping. They are not looking to get high. They are looking for wellness and quality of life.”
Vice President of the Coalition Dipesh Sharma says the group understands concerns about hemp products winding up in the hands of children, but that regulations are necessary rather than bans.
“Work with us, hold us accountable, but don’t erase an entire industry because it’s easier than doing the hard work of governing.”
The pleas come a day after Mayor Johnson told WBBM Political Editor Geoff Buchholz he wants to protect small business…as well as Chicago residents.
“All of that is being contemplated. I’m going to make a decision soon. Real soon.”
