CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - A young boy has died after a shooting on the Near West Side Tuesday afternoon.
That boy has been identified by the Cook County Medical Examiner as 7-year-old Jai'mani Amir Rivera.
Chicago Police Superintendent Larry Snelling said the boy was shot in the chest by a stray bullet while at the Oakley Square Apartments, a gated complex, near Jackson and Oakley, around 3 p.m.
“This wasn’t a situation where the parents didn’t know where their child was,” Snelling said. “This child was walking out of his residence and was struck by random gunfire.”
Snelling said Rivera was rushed to Stroger Hospital, where he died.
Mayor Brandon Johnson said his administration is trying to address the root causes of this kind of violence.
“As a city, we have to continue to surround one another, protect one another and do everything in our power to build a society in which a child can grow up and go outside without the fear of being murdered.”
CPD said it will be providing mental health resources to families in the area.
