(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — There’s tough news out of Alaska for fans of king and snow crab.
A rise in predation and water temperatures are blamed in part for a steep drop in snow crab populations. Alaska state regulators have canceled the crab season.
Dirk Fucik, owner of Dirk’s Fish & Gourmet Shop in Lincoln Park, says a bad situation now gets worse.
“This past year — ’22 — we’ve been having stuff that was from the year before,” he told WBBM Newsradio on Tuesday.
Now, that’s gone.
“The crab that’s available is going to be out of Russia, that’s really the only other source for crab in the world. So, really and truly, crab legs this year are going to be crazy. Right now we’re at $100 pound retail for king crab legs.”
His advice for crab connoisseurs? “Check your bank account and see how much you can afford to spend. Pop some in the freezer.”
