CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — About 2,000 Special Olympics Chicago athletes participated in opening ceremonies for the organization’s 2023 Spring Games on Monday at Soldier Field.
The games, which are always free and open to the public, will take place through Friday this week at Dunbar Park, located at 31st Street and South Michigan Avenue.
Athletes will compete each day from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., weather permitting, in more than 25 track and field events.
Among those competing will be 18-year-old Jeremiah Carter, who was joined by his mother Taliya at the opening ceremonies at Soldier Field Monday.
Carter, who’s been stacking up gold medals in the Special Olympics since he was 6 years old, will be competing in multiple events.
The games will feature any event that would normally be found in the Olympics, said Terrance Williams, who coaches athletes at the Ray Graham Training Center in Chicago. Each event has a corresponding wheelchair event, as well.
“If you have a chance to check it out, just come out there,” Williams said. “There’s going to be a lot of exciting things going on.”
