(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A City Council committee has given preliminary approval to a measure that could breathe new life into a sunsetting contract for ShotSpotter.

Mayor Brandon Johnson canceled the contract for the gunshot-detection system, which will wind down in the fall.

But the City Council's Police and Fire Committee on Monday approved a measure that would allow individual alderpersons to decide whether ShotSpotter could continue in their ward.

Ald. Monique Scott, 24th, said the technology has helped police locate shooting victims.

But others, including Ald. Lamont Robinson, 4th, said they should take more time to consider a potential reprieve for ShotSpotter.

The measure goes to the full City Council, where more discussion is expected.

Critics have said ShotSpotter is not always accurate and results in some communities being over-policed.
