CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- It’s budget planning time at the Chicago Public School system and the Schools CEO is warning a number of schools will be seeing cuts in the amount of money they get.
During a virtual budget briefing, CPS CEO Pedro Martinez said CPS is continuing to back away from student-based budgeting and more towards school-needs-based budgeting.
However, the student-based budgeting-allotting schools a certain amount of money based on the number of students is still going to be around in the coming year. Martinez said 82% of schools will see increases next year.
About 18% will see decreases. The Chicago Teachers Union said no schools should have their budgets cut.
"We remain concerned that the district’s current budgeting framework—student-based budgeting—places the schools most in need at the highest risk of losing out."
